AI Interview Helper That Works on Microsoft Teams
Microsoft Teams is the default video conferencing platform for enterprises that run on Microsoft 365. Major corporations, government agencies, consulting firms, and financial institutions conduct their interviews on Teams, making it one of the most important platforms for job seekers to understand. If you are interviewing at a Fortune 500 company, a Big Four consulting firm, or any large financial institution, your interview will very likely be on Teams.
PrepPilot provides an invisible AI overlay that works seamlessly with Microsoft Teams on both Windows and macOS. Unlike browser-based tools or Teams add-ins that are visible to IT administrators, PrepPilot runs as a standalone native application that Teams cannot detect or capture. This guide covers setup, configuration, and platform-specific considerations for using PrepPilot during Teams interviews.
Understanding Microsoft Teams' Architecture
Microsoft Teams has undergone significant architectural changes in recent years. The legacy Teams app was built on Electron, while the new Teams (officially called "New Microsoft Teams") is built on Edge WebView2. Both versions use the same OS-level screen capture APIs for screen sharing, which means PrepPilot's overlay protection works identically with both. There is also a web version of Teams that runs in any browser, which uses browser-native screen capture and is equally unable to capture PrepPilot's protected overlay.
Teams Desktop App vs. Web App
Many companies require candidates to use the Teams desktop app rather than the web version. From PrepPilot's perspective, this makes no difference. Both versions output audio through the system's default playback device, and both use OS-level screen capture for sharing. PrepPilot captures system audio regardless of whether it comes from the desktop app or the browser, and the overlay is invisible to both.
Teams' Compliance and Recording Features
Enterprise Teams deployments often include compliance recording, which automatically records all meetings for regulatory purposes. This is common in financial services and healthcare. PrepPilot's overlay is invisible to compliance recording for the same reason it is invisible to regular recording: the OS-level display exclusion prevents the overlay from being included in any capture stream. The recording captures the meeting content as participants see it, without the overlay.
Setting Up PrepPilot for Teams Interviews
- Install PrepPilot from the download page. Choose the Windows, macOS, or Linux version appropriate for your system.
- Configure audio routing. Teams has its own audio device settings separate from your system defaults. Open Teams settings, go to Devices, and note which speaker device is selected. Then verify that PrepPilot is set to capture from the same device.
- Handle corporate VPN. If you are interviewing at a company that requires Teams access through a VPN, PrepPilot's audio capture still works because it captures from the local audio output, not the network stream. The AI API calls (Deepgram transcription and model generation) require internet access, so ensure your VPN allows outbound HTTPS connections.
- Upload context documents. Add your resume and the job description to PrepPilot. For enterprise roles, also consider adding any company research notes to give the AI additional context for generating responses.
- Activate Stealth Mode before joining. Launch PrepPilot and enable Stealth Mode before clicking the Teams meeting link. The overlay appears and begins listening as soon as you activate it.
Teams-Specific Screen Sharing Scenarios
Presenter Mode in Teams
Teams offers several Presenter Mode options: Content Only, Standout, Side-by-side, and Reporter. All of these modes use the same underlying screen capture API. PrepPilot's overlay is invisible in all presenter modes because the exclusion operates at the compositor level, below the capture API layer.
PowerPoint Live in Teams
Some interviewers use PowerPoint Live to share presentations directly within Teams. This is different from screen sharing because the presentation is shared as a file rather than a screen capture. PrepPilot is unaffected by PowerPoint Live and the overlay continues to function normally while viewing the presentation.
Whiteboard and Collaborative Apps
Teams interviews sometimes involve collaborative whiteboarding or shared documents within the meeting. These features run within the Teams application and do not affect PrepPilot's operation. If you are asked to contribute to a whiteboard, the overlay remains invisible and continues providing AI assistance while you draw or type on the collaborative surface.
Enterprise IT Considerations
A concern specific to Teams interviews at large enterprises is whether IT departments can detect third-party applications running during a Teams meeting. Here are the facts:
- Teams does not report running processes. Microsoft Teams does not scan or report what other applications are running on your computer to the meeting organizer or IT administrators.
- Endpoint management is not meeting-aware. While companies may use Microsoft Intune or similar endpoint management tools on company-owned devices, these tools manage device compliance and are not designed to monitor what applications run during specific meetings. If you are using your own device for the interview, no endpoint management is installed.
- Network traffic is encrypted. PrepPilot's API calls to Deepgram and AI providers use HTTPS encryption. If the interview is conducted over a corporate VPN, the VPN administrator could see the destination domains but not the content. On your own network, this is not a concern.
- Teams admin center does not detect overlays. The Teams admin center provides meeting analytics like participant join times, duration, and audio quality metrics. It does not include any information about applications running on participants' devices.
Teams on Different Operating Systems
Windows
Teams on Windows is the most common configuration for enterprise interviews. PrepPilot uses SetWindowDisplayAffinity with the WDA_EXCLUDEFROMCAPTURE flag, which is fully supported on Windows 10 version 2004 and later. Since most enterprise environments run Windows 10 21H2 or Windows 11, compatibility is not a concern. The audio capture uses WASAPI loopback, which is the standard Windows audio capture mechanism and works with all audio configurations.
macOS
Teams on macOS is common at design agencies, creative firms, and technology companies. PrepPilot uses NSWindow.sharingType = .none for overlay protection on macOS 12 and later. Audio capture requires a virtual audio driver to duplicate the system output, which is installed automatically during PrepPilot's setup process. macOS Sonoma and later versions may prompt for screen recording permissions; PrepPilot needs this permission only for the audio capture component, not for screen recording itself.
Linux
While Teams on Linux has limited official support from Microsoft, some candidates use the web version of Teams on Linux. PrepPilot's Linux version provides full transcription and AI response generation. The overlay is visible but does not have the same OS-level capture protection as Windows and macOS. For Linux interviews conducted via browser-based Teams, sharing a specific browser tab is the safest option, as the overlay window exists outside the browser.
Common Teams Interview Formats
Consulting Case Interviews on Teams
Big Four and strategy consulting firms frequently use Teams for case interviews. These interviews involve complex mathematical calculations, framework application, and structured problem-solving. PrepPilot's AI excels at generating case frameworks, performing quick calculations, and suggesting structured approaches. The case interview frameworks page provides examples of the type of coaching the AI delivers during these sessions.
Finance Technical Interviews on Teams
Investment banks, asset managers, and financial advisory firms conduct technical interviews on Teams covering DCF analysis, LBO modeling, and market questions. PrepPilot handles these technical questions with detailed, structured responses that include formulas and step-by-step walkthroughs. See our stealth mode for finance page for more details.
HR Phone Screens on Teams
Many enterprise HR teams conduct initial phone screens using Teams audio or video calls. These screens focus on behavioral questions, salary expectations, and role fit. PrepPilot provides polished responses for common HR phone screen questions and can help with salary negotiation scripts when the conversation moves to compensation.
